San Diego Comic Con always furnishes us with such lovely presents, this year it’s the first trailer for 2017’s Doctor Who Christmas Special. The last episode featuring Peter Capaldi and Steven Moffat’s last script… Here we go! LINK TO WATCH TRAILER HERE:
So … We open on a literal blast from the past. That IS a scene from The Tenth Planet. William Hartnell’s last story as Doctor Who. That is amazing. And this next bit is so amazing I need to gif it:
We transition from Hartnell to Bradley, and from 4:3 to Widescreen. Oh my word that’s cool. The famous ‘Have you no emotions sir?’ scene from The Tenth Planet played out by David Bradley here, perhaps Moffat will give us the whole of Tenth Planet Ep 4 seeing as that’s missing from the archives?
One man… Until Jodie Whittaker turns up but shush for now we’re not there yet.
A recap of those closing moments of Series 10 as Twelve meets One…
The First Doctor’s regeneration begins… With more of that bloody orange glow that pollutes NewWho regenerations like a virus. THEY’VE RECAST POLLY TOO. I am not okay with that. I love Polly! Also note the background, they’re not in TARDIS. The South Pole base in Tenth Planet?
Recap of the beginning of Capaldi’s regeneration in The Doctor Falls.
Two Doctors facing regeneration in the same episode. Their fates are set…
I’ve died. I’ve died and gone to heaven. This is perfect. Look at that!
The Doctors, in the TARDIS. And yes there is a theory as to why the police box never quite looks right. The chameleon circuit is broken after all, the pattern can shift a little.
“Something has gone very wrong with time, we’re trapped inside a single moment” Trapped apparently in a World War One battle ground? Rather odd place for a multi-doctor story but sure I’ll take it,
Is that…? Toby Whithouse? Writer of School Reunion and creator of Being Human? Nice little cameo even if he is playing a German soldier.
Can I begin praising the director now? Rachel Talalay is a master at her work. Snowflakes fall, as The Doctor realises they’re trapped in time.
What happens if you poke a snowflake?
But who is this? Walking through the fog…
“So sorry. I don’t suppose either of you is a doctor?” It’s none other than Mark Gatiss! Co-creator of Sherlock and Moff’s best buddy in the whole wide world. Here he is playing a high ranking British soldier from WW1, and for the love of all deities I hope he’s not playing a relative of a certain Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart…
Curious glances shared between the Doctors.
“You trying to be funny?” Ah there’s Moffat’s meta humour creeping in. Can’t avoid it these days.
PETER CAPALDI. Yes he’s still around, about to turn into a woman so I hear.
The more we see of that original control room the merrier. And look at his hair! It’s become sentient.
Seeing as William Hartnell died in 1975 the poor bugger they’ve had to cast David Bradley as Doctor One. I’m sure he’ll do a marvellous job but I’m still not sold. He’s not quite got Hartnell’s attitude but he’s as close as we’re getting.
Doesn’t he look happy with himself. Even if the neck tie is the wrong colour. (It should be blue)
Gatiss appears in Doctor Who for the third time as the third character. Maybe this time it’ll be a good one.
“These police boxes they’re ever so good aren’t they?” You don’t know the half of it mate.
More of that smegging TARDIS flying through space shot from about 4 series ago. Come on lads use some of that budget and make a new one.
The Doctors are surprised by an explosion! Lord knows why Capaldi is stood on a ledge, maybe he’s changing a light bulb.
The Doctors stand in a small room, surrounded by mess. Nope, no idea. He points his sonic…
And something explodes! Twelve using his sonic because One didn’t have a sonic. Didn’t appear till half way through Troughton’s era.
Another thing explodes! I hope they’ve given the pyrotechnics crew a raise.
“We do have one little advantage” Floofy hair?
“What advantage?” The Doctor reaches out to grab a chain!
He grabs, and falls!
Don’t worry though, The Doctor is at the other end of the chain!
He pulls it, probably hoping to stop his predecessor falling to his death. That’s not how he regenerates! Funny sort of designs on the wall behind them, almost like the Cyberman Tombs on Telos…
“There’s two of us”
“Is he here? Is The Doctor here?” Who’s voice rings through the corridor?
Pearl Mackie! Bill is back! I think how happy I am proves how good Bill’s character was. We like Bill.
A nice big hug to sort everything out.
Doctor Who returns December 25th on BBC One for Twice Upon A Time!
