It’s been a year since they announced 2016 would be getting it’s own Doctor Who spin-off show, and with less than a month till it’s air date there’s a trailer fresh from New York Comic Con. And I wouldn’t be MattBobRoss if I didn’t have a good analysis of it would I?
We start with the revelation that Coal Hill is now an Academy. Gone are the days when it was a measly school where any old creature could land a spaceship in it’s playground. Let’s assume (based of the ages of the actors) the Academy part adds a Sixth Form.
A dark and potentially ominous corridor. It’s the cleanest school I’ve ever seen.
“I can travel through space and I can travel through time but I can’t always be there when you need me” Right… For fear of jamming up the timelines or something? Probably. Or maybe he’s started taking days off now he’s over 2000.
“Sometimes, you have to take survival upon yourselves”
Fady Elsayed’s character ‘Ram’ looks down in shock at something far too blurry to hazard a guess what it might be. He’s got his towel so hitchhiking will be easy.
Greg Austin (the one with the gaming YouTube channel…) and his character of Charlie looks at something. How interesting!
Sophie Hopkins’ character of April changes the formula by looking upwards! Whatever next?
Vivian Oparah’s character of Tanya is looking further upwards and she appears to be surrounded by a party? Prom night my guess.
Katherine Kelly plays Miss Quill. The teacher that apparently no one wants and she’s a grump. A physics teacher (it wasn’t going to be Textiles was it?) who is probably put in charge of the misfit students charged with protecting Coal Hill.
“What will you do when the shadows come?” A shadowy creature hurries down a corridor. The synopsis released for the first episode reveal the enemy is called a Shadow Kin. And if that doesn’t sound like a YA villain nothing will.
“When you can’t turn away?” Ram runs down a street! Possibly to escape the thing they’re all glancing at off screen earlier. Or maybe he’s being chased by the team from EpicWho. Who’s to say…
“From the darkness ahead…” A look at a planet with lots of mini volcanoes and sparks everywhere.
The Doctor appears to be standing on the aforementioned volcano planet. Or maybe he’s just in a cave. Either way the dark blue crombie coat seems to be back.
He reaches out! To grab the last Jelly Baby in the packet!
“For time has looked at your faces…”
The ridiculously clean corridor from earlier goes wibbly. Patrick Ness’ lawyer has asked me to point out this definitely isn’t one of those Anomalies from Primeval. So there.
“And time never forgets!” A final zoom in to prove this show is definitely in the Whoniverse and don’t you forget it. They confirmed last week or so Twelve will feature in Episode 1. Let’s presume he’s not in the other episodes, why is he taking such a large role in this trailer? Are they not confident in their show?
Class. From the universe of Doctor Who. On BBC 3 (wherever that is nowadays) on October 22nd.
