Literally an hour after Heaven Sent finished here I am taking screenshots of the finale trailer and analysing them for you 🙂
Here’s The Doctor, wandering through Gallifrey’s deserts. Presumably going back to The Capitol after the cliffhanger from Heaven Sent. He’s taken his jacket off and unbuttoned his waistcoat, must be too hot on Gallifrey.
More walking!
He’s walking to the barn we saw John Hurt’s War Doctor face The Moment in, and also where Clara landed TARDIS in Series 8’s Listen which featured Clara giving a speech to a young Doctor hiding his tears from the other boys in the Timelord Academy.
The camera zooms in…
A ship (of un familiar design) hovers over some people, who seem to be wearing cowboy gear… Cowboy Gallifreyans? Sure why not. They’re probably Shobogans…
Yes it’s the Citadel/Capitol/Whatever. Basically all the Timelords live in this glass dome. Why haven’t the BBC started selling Snowglobes yet?
This bloke is Donald Sumpter, who played two different minor roles in Classic Who (and a wizard in SJA) but here he’s cast as ‘President’. He’s holding what is quite clearly Rassilon’s staff. Do the Timelords depose Rassilon after his failure in 2009’s The End of Time? What happened to Romana? Could the BBC afford Timothy Dalton again? SO MANY QUESTIONS!
He turns around in the trailer, and seen behind him is some more of The Sisterhood of Karn. It seems Moffat is keen on Karn.
The Doctor turns around to notice…
A Weeping Angel! They haven’t appeared since 2013’s Time Of The Doctor but they’re here on Gallifrey. And appear to be tied up. maybe that fan theory about Timelords creating the Angels is coming true…
A pick-up truck drives down a road, and if Doctor Who Magazine should tell the truth the Doctor visits that diner from 2011’s The Impossible Astronaut where one of Clara’s splinters is a waitress. This is probably in Utah.
The Doctor’s coming into focus, reaching out his hand.
And again…
Now this is a curious thing. My theory is that it’s a Timelord glitching through regenerations. I’ve consulted my copy of George Mann’s Engines of War (featuring The War Doctor) and it features the story of former President Borusa who (after the events of The Five Doctors) is hijacked by Rassilon and became a ‘Possibility Engine’. He has the ability to see every possible timeline and every possible outcome of the war. It’s interesting stuff and my thinking after looking at this person went to the Possibility Engine.
The Doctor is stood in his barn, looking down at a mysterious woman. She’s simply credited as ‘The Woman’ but then again so was that woman Who fans think was The Doctor’s mother in 2009’s The End of Time.
He’s giving some ominous looks to ‘The Woman’.
A TARDIS! It’s a proper old style TARDIS! Yes in case you didn’t know TARDISes (what is the plural?!) look like a grey cylinder when a Chameleon Circuit is off.
Oh those Roundels look so good!
The Doctor revisits an old control room, and judging by filming pictures sneakily taken this was filmed on Hartnell’s console room which was rebuilt for An Adventure in Space and Time and currently lies in The Doctor Who Experience. Filming pictures also show Clara in TARDIS too… Take that how you will.
Timelord soldiers take aim at The Doctor, a firing squad for the legendary hybrid destined to rule Gallifrey?
Timelord Stazers and armour looking pretty similar to those seen in the Time-war from 2013’s Day of The Doctor.
Close up on Capaldi again. Rachel Talalay (director) really seems to like zooming in on Capaldi’s face.
The Doctor (presumably) runs his hand over a stone with Gallifreyan writing inscribed on it. Who still inscribes on stone walls?
The Doctor walks down a golden corridor, and I have no idea where to place this one.
Ohila of the Sisterhood of Karn (seen by Moffat as The Doctor’s mother figure) watches a TARDIS materialise.
She’s shaking her head, perhaps disappointed by something The Doctor has done in the TARDIS?
The Doctor, The General from Day of The Doctor and a guard stand atop a tall building in the Capitol.
The General – “Isn’t this going a little far?”
The Doctor – “I’ve barely started”
The Doctor punches (it looks more like a slap) The General!
The General was the one who told The Doctor to freeze Gallifrey in Day of The Doctor. Does The Doctor regret that choice?
A Dalek! In the same sort of wiring seen with the Weeping Angel previously. The Timelords seem to be keeping some sort of ‘Zoo of Deadly Monsters’
The camera flies over the Capitol, and some sort of flying car.
This is obviously meant to be Clara, but we don’t actually SEE Jenna Coleman. She’s not in the official cast list either…
Some floating crafts shoot on Gallifryan soldiers. Could this be how The Doctor escapes the firing squad?
What is is with this director and zooming in on Capaldi’s face?!
And the closing shot is the TARDIS doors opening to reveal some blinding light.
There we go! My word this looks exciting! There is the ‘next time’ trailer too and that analysis might be done… Maybe 🙂
It’s not supposed to be Clara, it’s supposed to be Susan (Foreman).

What makes you say that? There’s been zero indication Susan might be reappearing and it’s Clara’s clothes so…

“Timelord soldiers take aim at The Doctor, a firing squad for the legendary hybrid destined to rule Gallifrey?”
Interesting take on that image. Do you think that the Doctor’s final words in Heaven Sent (“…the hybrid destined to conquer Gallifrey and stand in its ruins – is me.”) mean that he is the hybrid? Anyhow, I originally thought that, however seeing ‘Me’ in the next time trailer (i.e. Ashildr) reminded me of how I felt in ‘Face the Raven’ when I forgot that Me is the name Ashildr chose. Could Me not be the hybrid?
In the next time trailer for Hell Bent the War Council chief says the hybrid is a creature thought to be cross bread from two warrior races – do humans and the Mire (one of the one of the deadliest and most advanced warrior races in the galaxy) fit the bill? Maybe not humans…
Also in the next time trailer, the Doctor says: “I know I went too far.” Is this him reflecting upon his emotion fuelled ‘I save people!’ moment when he created Me back in the Viking village?
Maybe the Doctor is the hybrid (as he has claimed to be half human in the past) but my guess is it’s Ashildr/Me.
Also, I think the Dalek in the trailer looks a little like Rusty from ‘Into the Dalek’ with all it’s wires attached. What do you think?

I think human could easily fit the bill for warrior race, and the Mire were said to be ‘one of the deadliest warrior races in the universe’ in their episode. It’s hard trying to work out if The Doctor (or rather Moffat) would deliberately use the ‘Me’ pronoun to get a cool cliffhanger. It’s entirely possible, what with the ‘Next time’ trailer showing Ashildr’s return.
Rusty! I had forgotten about that Dalek, maybe the idea of a Timelord Zoo would be backed up if it was Rusty. The Timelords are going to be very interested in a good Dalek.

Ha ha, a Time Lord zoo, with the Weeping Angel and a good Dalek – and Ashildr?
Also maybe the two warrior races could be the Mire and the Vikings (not humans generally). They made quite a big point of demonstrating how war hungry all Vikings are.

The hybrid is Me. The Doctor says it himself ;p

He says me, but did he mean me as in himself, or Me as in Ashildr (well the name she gives herself)?

OOOh, this is brilliant, I missed so much of this sped up! I got it wrong about Donald Sumpter- for some reason he looks to be like the guy who played President Borusa in the Five Doctors, but now looking back, perhaps I remember his face wrong- I definitely recognised him from Classic Who! Thanks for this!
I was watching the series 9 trailer again and I keep thinking there is a clip of Missy (lookng up slowly) at 0:45 which I am SURE wasn’t in the first two episodes this series- what do you think??? I’m pretty sure she is going to pop up again. After all, she gave him the confession dial which he ended up in in Heaven Sent and that has been integral to the series. She hated Clara and since it links to the timelords, maybe we get to see how John Simm became Missy- perhaps that is the regeneration that is taking place in the episode! What do you think? Am I wrong with that series 9 trailer image being shown in the series yet? Especially with the sisterhood of Karn being there!?

Would that clip be the one of Missy looking up towards the camera? If so I think that was seen when Skaro revealed itself when Missy and Clara were stood outside the desert. She’s explaining about how they are syncing with the spectrum.
I would LOVE to see the Simm to Missy regeneration, but remember most characters (even the extras) in this episode will have the ability to regenerate.

Oh rats! Maybe. Yes,I realised that there would be er- everyone able to regenerate!
Noooooooooooooooooooooo, surely not Clara as the Doctor’s mother Krys-that’s too far even for Moffatt!

I wish I had a more in depth response for this post, but I agree with he breakdown so entirely & am in line with your speculations & ideas for what this episode might involve. My only thoughts are 1) I quite enjoy Capaldi’s look, 2) I really hope “the Woman” is supposed to be his mother as I feel it would be fitting to have his mother involved in his homecoming, and 3) I believe that is Jenna Coleman & that they didn’t release her name with the cast list so as to surprise fans.

I’m also dying to see what your analysis on the next time trailer would contain! I think there are some interesting bits in that one as well.

I like the idea of the regeneration being the Master turning into Missy that would be interesting. also do you think Donald Sumpter is a regenerated Rassilon as the last time we saw him as Timothy Dalton the Master was zapping him back into the time war and that might have injured him causing a regeneration.

Maybe? But then I still don’t understand how Rassilon was there and evil, since he died hundreds of years ago (not including his appearance in the 5 Doctors). But then I also didnt know why Eric Roberts’ Master became Derek Jacobi and that was never explained.
