During the San Diego Comic Con Panel on July 9th, the BBC released the first trailer for Doctor Who Series 9 (or if you count properly it’s Season 35 but never mind). Here’s my frame by frame trailer breakdown, each frame reviewed by me! Mostly because I wanted to do this before Blogtor Who or DoctorWhoTV did one 🙂
Oh and I apologise for having the YouTube Video guff around the pictures but my laptop isn’t the best at screenshotting.
Now then, starting with a star field! I started humming the 80s Trial Of A Timelord theme seeing this. Nice little shot to entice people to keep watching, slow start though unlike the rest of this very fast paced trailer.
And then we see the TARDIS flying past! Some of you may remember last year in the Series 8 trailer they re-used a shot from Series 6 of the ship flying through space… Nice to see the BBC are spending all of their limited budget.
Look at this beautiful console room! Still not as good as Paul McGann’s gothic mansion console room, but now with the added roundels on the wall it looks superb. And yes they’re called ROUNDELS! David Tennant can sod off calling them ’round things’ and not knowing what they do. In the Classic Era they were used for a number of things, access panels to machinery and wires, viewing screens, and that sort of thing.
It seems to just be P-Cap in the TARDIS here, no companion… *crosses all the fingers hoping Clara has left* It seems to be in trouble here with the explosions and everything, but with Doctor Who the console explodes every half an hour.
Clara seen here running down some sort of corridor. I’ll get back to this corridor, we see a lot of this in this trailer.
A figure can be seen jumping through a closing door. Most expect this to be The Doctor, but to me it doesn’t seem to him. I could be wrong as it’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, but it doesn’t look like The Doctor.
This woman I don’t recognise. That means The BBC haven’t made a big song and dance about her casting. Probably a minor character in this episode, and she’s in that aforementioned sea base that appears so often in this trailer.
A big robot. It’s been a while since we’ve had a decent robot. That Skolvox thingy from last series was naff, but this one seems to be descended from Drathro (look him up!). The BBC released a promotional picture a few weeks ago with these things in clear view (https://instagram.com/p/2S3MXIjqZq/?taken-by=bbcdoctorwho) and they’re probably appearing in episodes 4/5 with Maisie Williams.
Now then, this bugger. Yes if you missed it in the trailer, THE DALEKS ARE BACK. I’m almost disappointed, me like so many more on the internet think the Daleks need a break. Into The Dalek last series was utter poop and we don’t need more of that.
This Dalek is being crushed by a wall/roof/similar. And just a thought, but the background wall there. It looks quite a lot like Missy’s Nethersphere from last series…
An eye! Yes we see an eye open, because it’s in a trailer I reckon it’s a returning character. And with the dark skin I’m thinking Courtney Woods. Remember her? The irritating as hell school girl last year? Or those also irritating as hell Maitland kids Clara was babysitting in Series 7b.
A corridor! The staple of Doctor Who, and apparently this bloody trailer. Yes it’s the sea base again! Looking quite mouldy here.
The robots in a clearer shot, not much else to see here.
The hands rising from the mud! Just a glimpse here, but note how we don’t see the bodies, just a lot of hands… I could also make another Trial Of A Timelord reference but you lot won’t get it. (shame on you all)
This is an ugly thing isn’t he? Definitely humanoid, we see him walking in the trailer, with big black spots where his eyes should be. And what’s up with his neck?!
The Daleks once again, and although my screenshot doesn’t show it, there’s a classic era grey Dalek just about visible in the background as he turns his head. Are we finally getting a Dalek story that we were promised back in 2012 with ‘every dalek ever’??
This is an odd fella, two face man. Last year we had The Half Face Man, now Moffat has gone the other way. Some sort of betting game in front of them with three pieces of paper and three shots. Some gambling coming in Doctor Who?
A hairy version of the robots seen earlier. Some form of disguise perhaps?
A door! With someone sat down in front of it. This seems to be the sea base once again, and looking very mouldy.
Missy! Yes the woman who caused many a controversy last year is back. Not much of a surprise as the BBC announced she was returning about half an hour after Series 8 finished but never mind… She’s looking in a mirror too, and what’s the red light in the background? Targeting laser perhaps?
I love this shot, P-Cap with his little shrug and smile. Has his Doctor finally cheered up a bit? It’s also odd to think of the context of this shot, why would The Doctor be looking down the camera and shrug? Maybe a clip from Doctor Who Extra was mixed in accidentally 🙂
This city troubles me… It looks quite a lot like The Dalek City from The Dead Planet (the first ever Dalek story). So this means they’re going back to Skaro, and if popular rumour is to believed, The Doctor is meeting young Davros. I hate that idea, please Moffat don’t ruin Terry Nation’s Dalek stories?
Nope, I’ve got noting. I have no idea who this might be, he’s got weird symbols on his face and he’s stood in a quarry. I’m at a blank.
The wide shot! Now that’s more like it. The outfits the people are wearing and the Olympic Torch style objects they are holding suggests to me this is Karn. Remember that planet 8 crashed onto and regenerated into John Hurt? Also featured in the Tom Baker story Brain of Morbius. Now why would we go back here? We know Clare Higgins is returning, who previously starred as one of the Sisterhood of Karn, so yeh I think this is the planet Karn.
An empty TARDIS here, both Doctor and companion no where to be seen. They’ve left the lights off too, so that means they’re… saving energy… Can you tell there’s not much to see here?
Clara’s back in the Sanctuary Base 6 suit from Series 2! Probably the most used prop in all New Who. Note the very lovely roundels in the background too.
Grumpy Doctor! Look at his eyebrows!
A close up of Michelle Gomez now, a slight hint of purple costume at the bottom left so possibly in her same get-up as the Mary Poppins suit from Series 8.
The woman seen crouching earlier, now stood up! She drags another human out of the way to reveal:
This fella! This actor is Colin McFarlane. Previously in Torchwood Children Of Earth and that comedy thing Rufus Hound did on CBBC. Same big black spots where his eyes should be as the other bloke with the funny neck. Ghostly appearance too, maybe this episode features a Sea Base being haunted by alien ghosts… Sounds very Doctor Who.
And here’s the sea base! During the Second Doctor’s era base-under-siege stories were common place. And speaking of Patrick Troughton:
P-Cap has only gone and borrowed his trousers. Plaid chequered trousers part of the costume here. An absolute pain in the arse for any blokes wanting to cosplay this. He also seems to be running out of a barn, possibly in the Maisie Williams episodes, rumoured to be ‘Vikings in Space’
He runs up, and hugs Clara. Lucky git.
Clara in the mouldy sea base again, in some sort of school teacher get-up. This suggests we’re going back to Series 8’s view of travelling being a hobby of Clara’s. I hated that last year.
First glimpse of The Zygons! Last seen in the 50th Anniversary special where they were just sort of forgotten about. The BBC confirmed Kate Lethbridge-Stewart and Osgood reappearing too, despite the slight problem Osgood was killed last series…
Though whilst writing this the BBC have said it’s worth noting that Osgood doesn’t appear in this trailer. How cryptic.
TARDIS console exploding again, nice to see Danny Hargreaves is getting paid a lot. (https://twitter.com/dannysfx)
Rock on Doctor! Now, why on Earth would The Doctor need to play guitar on what appears to be a stage. He’ll probably claim Jimi Hendrix taught him…
With this ugly mug I’m thinking, sea creature. It looks like it belongs on Davy Jones’ crew from Pirates of The Caribbean. So that adds another scene from the sea base episode.
He’s staring down The Doctor, note the look of terror on The Doctor’s face…
Another eye. This one probably belongs to Jenna Coleman.
Yep, the Sanctuary Base 6 suit used again. She seems to be floating in space too, odd to piece this together…
The Doctor and Clara running down a corridor, away from those fellas with the black spot eyes. So yeh, sea base again.
Now this one’s interesting. A lot of soldiers in a wasteland. Some gun fire, a few explosions, standard warfare stuff. Very faint in the sky though, what looks like bi-planes. How odd.
More battle. No specific uniforms here, standard military stuff.
The look on Jenna’s face here says “Stop that you silly man”
I wear glasses now, glasses are cool.
An action shot of the sonic flying through the sky. We don’t see who threw it, or who catches it so not much use BBC. It does look cool though.
The Doctor seems to now be in the wilderness now, helping out in the battle?
OH. MY. GOD.
And now, a scene right at the end most missed:
Maisie Williams! The adorable Maisie Williams join the Doctor Who cast, playing some sort of highway-woman.
“What took you so long old man?”
So who do we think? Susan Foreman? Jenny? Young Clara?
So there we are, over 1,700 words written. Blimey. Hope you enjoyed =)
